Book Car Hire Madrid Airport

Madrid is Spain's capital city, located in the centre of the country and served by Madrid Barajas airport which is one of the largest and busiest airports in Europe and the world. More than three million people live in Madrid with more than five million if you count the Greater Metropolitan area. Many of these people define themselves by the city itself, referring to themselves as Madrilenos.

This is a city which never sleeps, except during the summer siesta months, and this should be born in mind when choosing your accommodation as hotels or hostels in the centre may not work out well for light sleepers. With so many bars to visit, many Madrilenos don't even bother going to bed and just stay up till they have to be at work the next day.

As well as having an incredible nightlife there are many fine cultural attractions including the Reina Sofia national Art Museum, the Prado Museum and the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum of Art which form a hallowed golden triangle of art museums. Although Madrid will always be associated as the headquarters of the Franco dictatorship which ruled Spain for many years until the general's death in the seventies, today the city is as cosmopolitan as anywhere else in Europe.

There are a huge amount of Latin Americans, Chinese and Africans among other nationalities which now call Madrid home. After Franco there was a counter culture punk movement, or Movida, in Spain, out of which the film maker Pedro Almodovar became famous and the gay movement in Madrid is still widely accepted.
