Book Car Hire Madeira Airport

Funchal is the capital of the beautiful island of Madeira. Although Madeira is part of Portugal it lies out in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Africa. Funchal has about 150,000 residents making it the busiest Portuguese city which is not actually on mainland Portugal.

The city has great natural beauty, lying in a valley surrounded by forest-covered mountains and overlooking the Ocean. In the central part of the city is a cable car which takes a very attractive route up into the mists of the mountains and towards a botanical garden. This garden is world famous and so must be seen by anyone visiting Funchal. As well as all kinds of orchids, lilies and trees, it has the world's oldest olive tree which was around from before the time of Christ.

The cable car is part of the fun and you will get spectacular views out over Funchal, the red roof tops and the banana plantations. Funchal looks a bit like a miniature version of Rio de Janeiro and down the road there is indeed a Christ statue.

The city is centred around a large harbour and this is the second biggest harbour in Portugal outside of Lisbon and much of its traffic is taken up with cruise ships. In the old days much of the business was with Madeiran wine and sugar.

The main way to get into Madeira is through Funchal international airport which has connections with all of the major European destinations including Germany, England and Holland.
